One of my very favorite places in all of our Looper travels turned out to be this amazing spot that Garnet Carter and his wife Frieda had the vision to nurture and preserve for all of us to visit and tour. They began development in the late 1920’s from an original path through their personal estate.
The 1700 foot views are spectacular – Lover’s Leap, Observation Point, and the Flag Court with a view of seven surrounding states. Of course we ran into fellow Loopers Steve & Liz, and Steve & Kathy, who were exploring the same vistas.
The gardens of the Enchanted Trail are lovingly tended to all year round and are the showcase for 400 different native plant species. Each season must be spectacular, but our fall foliage experience was a blazing bloom of reds, yellows, golds and oranges – with shades of green mixed in for contrast.
The rock formations are unbelievable – from the Grand Corridor and Needle’s Eye to the Tortoise Shell Rock, the Mushroom Rock and the 1000 Ton Balanced Rock.
Woven throughout the entire park are spaces that have been converted into such wonderlands as Gnome Valley, Goblin’s Underpass, the Swing-along Bridge, Fat man’s Squeeze, the Fairyland Caverns and the Mother Goose Village.
We really could have spent much more time there as it is a photographer’s paradise.
